  • Alcohol is abused by some 14 million Americans and contributes to the deaths of 100,000 each year.
  • While a couple of drinks make most people feel relaxed, more alcohol may cause feelings of anxiety, depression, and often aggression. Alcohol''s first effect as it reaches the outer brain is to distort your judgment and lower you inhibition, while producing euphoria (a sense of pleasure).
  • Alcohol has been known to increase digestion, but this may be due to its relaxing effect, when a person has a couple of drinks before a meal. In higher "doses", alcohol can cause gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), which is one of the reasons that an individual may experience heartburn and nausea the day after binge drinking; heavy drinking on a continuous basis can lead to stomach ulceration.
  • Taxpayers cover much of the cost of alcohol-related disease through publicly funded insurance policies like Medicaid.
