While a couple of drinks make most people feel relaxed, more alcohol may cause feelings of anxiety, depression, and often aggression. Alcohol�''s first effect as it reaches the outer brain is to distort your judgment and lower you inhibition, while producing euphoria (a sense of pleasure).
During the colonial times, alcohol consumption was quite common with men and women. It was a custom to pause for drinks several times a day.
Research suggests that all pregnant women should be screened for alcohol use during prenatal visits. Women who are positive for alcohol, or prove to be at-risk, should be identified early by physicians and referred for counseling and treatment.
According to the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), alcohol is the drug that is used most often by high school seniors; although they cannot legally purchase alcohol, over 90% of them have tried it and almost on third of them have reported that they have had more than five drinks at one time within the past month.
