  • Alcohol is a depressant that affects the central nervous system; alcohol abuse can worsen existing conditions such as depression or induce new problems such as serious memory loss, depression, or anxiety.
  • According to a 2006 survey, over one tenth of 12 or 13 year olds and more than one third of 14 or 15 year olds reported alcohol use (a whole drink) in the past year.
  • In 2007, 9.7 percent of youth ages 12 to 20 reported binge drinking in the past month. The rate for heavy drinking was 2.3 percent.
  • Alcohol dependence has no one single cause and is not directly passed from one generation to another genetically. Rather, it is the result of a complex group of genetic, psychological, and environmental factors.
