  • Due to alcohol's sedating effect, many people with insomnia consume alcohol to promote sleep. However, alcohol consumed within a hour of bedtime appears to disrupt the second half of the sleep period.
  • Binge drinking, which can potentially be deadly, is most often described as consuming five or more drinks at one sitting.
  • According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, it was determined that college students were more likely to intervene in a drunk-driving situation if they knew and liked the driver, but only if the driver was evaluated to be dangerous and they felt that they would be able to help. Students were less likely to intervene when they were drunk themselves, or when they were afraid of how their intervention would affect their relationship with their peers.
  • Social factors can often contribute to alcoholism, as many alcoholics often have poor social skills and do not function well in a variety of social situations. These individuals may initially begin to drink in order to feel more comfortable in social situations, but may later cross over the invisible line between social drinking into alcoholism.
