  • Women who drink alcohol are more likely than men to develop alcoholic hepatitis (liver inflammation) and to die from cirrhosis.
  • Alcoholism has no prejudices. It can affect anyone regardless of their race, socio- economic background, religion or education.
  • Problem drinkers are mostly found in young adults between the ages of 18 and 29. Conversely, the age group with the fewest alcohol problems is adults who are 65 years old or older.
  • Denial is perhaps the hugest obstacle to getting help for alcoholism; the desire to drink can be so strong that the mind finds a way to rationalize drinking. Denial exacerbates alcohol related problems by keeping the individual from looking honestly at the negative effects of their drinking behavior.
